US Shutdown Halts Solana Spot ETF Progress, Delays Crypto Approvals
The pursuit of Solana Spot Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) and other crypto ETFs remains a pivotal topic for digital asset investors, with many anticipating that their approval could ignite a substantial bullish market trend. However, these products consistently face significant regulatory hurdles. The latest setback stems from a United States government shutdown, which has effectively stalled the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) review process for Solana and other spot crypto ETF applications.
According to reports from SolanaFloor, the shutdown has disrupted the SEC’s capacity to process new applications and has specifically paused the review of crucial S-1 filings. This regulatory freeze is set to delay key decisions regarding various impending crypto spot ETFs, including those for Dogecoin and XRP. Greg Xethalis of Multicoin Capital highlighted that beyond 19b-4 approvals, these funds still necessitate registration under the 1933 and 1934 Acts, indicating a multi-layered approval process. In response, issuers like Bitwise Invest and Grayscale have withdrawn delayed amendments, a move that could technically allow them to take effect after 20 days, though exchange clearance and Form 8-A filings are still required for actual listing.
Despite these delays, the expectation for Solana ETFs is high, especially following the successful launches of Bitcoin and Ethereum spot ETFs. With the government anticipated to reopen soon, over 90 crypto ETFs are awaiting SEC approval. Data from Erving places Solana and XRP at the forefront of assets expected to secure the next spot ETF approvals. This strong positioning underscores significant investor conviction in these tokens, and their eventual approval is widely seen as a catalyst for the next phase of institutional adoption within the broader crypto market. The benefits include broader market access and potential price appreciation, while risks primarily revolve around prolonged regulatory uncertainty and the complex approval pathway.
