Cardano’s Upgrade Plan: Hoskinson’s Vision for a Crypto City
Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, recently outlined ambitious plans to revitalize the network. He envisions a simulated “crypto city” populated by AI agents to test Cardano’s upcoming privacy layer, Midnight, and scaling solutions. This virtual environment will allow developers to analyze transactions and stress-test the system’s capabilities in a controlled setting, moving beyond simply focusing on transactions per second (TPS). A key component of this upgrade is Midnight, a sidechain designed to facilitate the issuance of private stablecoins, emphasizing Hoskinson’s belief that privacy-preserving assets are crucial for future competitiveness. Another critical aspect is improving finality times. Hoskinson advocates for integrating Ouroboros Paris, a BFT-style add-on, to significantly reduce transaction settlement times from half a day to minutes, despite facing pushback from engineering committees. Governance is also a major concern. Hoskinson suggests introducing a community-elected “president” to provide executive leadership and ensure accountability in meeting network-level KPIs, addressing the current lack of a centralized authority for strategic decision-making. Furthermore, Hoskinson discussed the potential revival of Crypsinous, a private staking protocol, and the integration of Bitcoin DeFi through a three-layer stack utilizing BitVM-X and Hydra, aiming for significant market expansion. Despite addressing challenges such as misinformation surrounding his role in the ICO, Hoskinson remains determined to realize his vision, viewing these issues as part of the maturation process of decentralized systems. Ultimately, his goal is to create a more efficient, private, and scalable Cardano network that can compete effectively in the evolving cryptocurrency landscape.
