Vitalik Buterin’s Plan to Simplify Ethereum
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s co-founder, has proposed a simplification of the Ethereum base protocol to enhance efficiency and resilience. He draws inspiration from Bitcoin’s elegantly simple design, highlighting its ease of understanding and implementation. Buterin argues that simplicity is crucial for scalability, neutrality, and trust, reducing infrastructure costs, maintenance, bugs, and attack vulnerabilities. His proposed simplification strategy involves three key areas: optimizing the consensus layer (specifically, a 3-slot finality redesign), simplifying the execution layer by potentially replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) with a minimal virtual machine like RISC-V, and standardizing protocols across different parts of the network. The challenge lies in balancing simplification with backward compatibility for existing applications. Buterin emphasizes the close relationship between simplicity and decentralization as cornerstones of blockchain resilience. While the proposed changes aim to improve Ethereum’s performance, the impact on the ETH token’s price remains uncertain, particularly given its relatively underwhelming performance in the early months of 2025, despite recent bullish momentum. The current ETH price hovers around $1,817. Buterin’s vision aims to make Ethereum more accessible and robust, ultimately strengthening its position in the cryptocurrency landscape.
