Visa Expands to Latin America with Stablecoin Payments
Visa is launching a new service enabling stablecoin payments in six Latin American countries, starting with Mexico and Argentina. This initiative aims to leverage the growing adoption of stablecoins as a hedge against economic volatility in the region. The service will allow consumers to use Visa-branded cards, both physical and digital, to make purchases using stablecoins, with merchants receiving payments seamlessly in their local currency. This integration is facilitated by Bridge’s technology, which simplifies the process of incorporating stablecoins into financial applications. A key example highlights a Colombian freelancer receiving US dollar payments in stablecoins and then using a Visa card for local spending. The service initially focuses on USDC, a stablecoin backed by Circle and Coinbase, but plans to support other stablecoins and blockchain technologies in the future. This move is not Visa’s first foray into cryptocurrency; they’ve previously worked with cryptocurrency platforms, enabling Bitcoin and other digital currency spending. The partnership with Bridge, acquired by Stripe for $1.1 billion, allows Visa to offer its new payment service to third parties, enabling them to develop their own stablecoin applications. The benefit for businesses, especially in areas with limited financial infrastructure, is the ability to create financial products similar to popular apps like Chime or Cash App without extensive local financial networks. Visa and Bridge aim to launch the service in the chosen Latin American countries within weeks, making cryptocurrency a more accessible option for everyday transactions in emerging markets. The seamless integration and immediate local currency payments for merchants are key selling points, highlighting the potential to further normalize stablecoin usage.
