SBF Alleges Political Retaliation Behind FTX Arrest

Best Crypto Hardware Wallet Reviews

Incarcerated FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) has reignited controversy by alleging that his December 2022 arrest was an act of political retaliation orchestrated by the Biden administration’s regulators. In a post on GETTR, SBF claims his evolving political alignment and significant donations to Republican campaigns, alongside public Democratic contributions, precipitated regulatory scrutiny. He asserts that the timing of his arrest was specifically engineered to silence him ahead of crucial congressional testimony and a vote on a crypto regulation bill he was involved in. This narrative challenges the official reasons for his apprehension, painting it as an attempt to suppress dissent and influence legislative outcomes.

SBF detailed his political evolution, noting that while he was center-left in 2020, by 2022, he became wary of the Democratic stance on crypto due to what he perceived as aggressive regulatory actions by SEC Chair Gary Gensler and the DOJ. Consequently, he began privately donating tens of millions to Republican causes, in addition to his public Democratic donations. Reports indicate SBF made approximately $40 million in political donations during the 2022 election cycle, with a substantial portion, around $27 million, directed to “Protect Our Future PAC,” which supported Democratic candidates. He previously admitted that his Republican donations were nearly equal but kept private to avoid media attention.

The timing of SBF’s arrest, occurring just weeks before a significant crypto bill was set for a vote and the day before he was slated to testify before Congress, forms a core part of his allegations. House Republicans have echoed these concerns, demanding transparency from Gensler regarding communications related to the SEC and DOJ’s actions. Adding to the controversy, it was revealed that Gary Gensler’s government-issued phone underwent an enterprise wipe, deleting all texts between October 2022 and September 2023, which the SEC Office of Inspector General attributed to automated IT policy and a syncing failure. Despite these claims, SBF continues to serve a 25-year sentence after being convicted on seven criminal counts.
