Saylor’s Bitcoin Strategy Under Fire: Collapse or Resilience?
Michael Saylor’s Bitcoin strategy, central to his company MicroStrategy (MSTR), involves accumulating substantial Bitcoin holdings, a model under intense scrutiny since recent BTC price crashes. Historically, MSTR stock benefited from trading at a premium to its underlying Bitcoin assets. However, this dynamic has reversed, with MSTR’s market value minus non-Bitcoin assets (mNAV) recently falling below the actual value of its Bitcoin holdings (mNAV below 1), raising significant concerns.
Critics like economist Peter Schiff predict MSTR’s eventual bankruptcy, labeling its business model a “fraud” and challenging Saylor to a debate. The risk is compounded by a significant portion of MSTR’s Bitcoin, specifically 43% of its holdings, currently being held at a loss based on their average purchase prices. Saylor recently dismissed rumors of offloading, confirming instead an $835 million BTC purchase, its largest since July, albeit at a high average price of $102,171, well above current market rates. The company’s overall average purchase price for its total BTC holdings stands at $74,433.
Further exacerbating the risks, veteran trader Peter Brandt forecasts a potential Bitcoin drop below $50,000. Such a decline would push MSTR’s entire Bitcoin portfolio underwater, “severely testing” Saylor’s strategy. Pundits like Dom Kwok warn that if MSTR’s mNAV remains below 1, the company might be forced to sell its Bitcoin to meet debt obligations or interest payments, a critical operational constraint for treasury companies. Crypto pundit Mana also cautioned about an impending “Strategy collapse,” citing investor withdrawals and bleeding earnings, advising market participants to divest MSTR shares. While Bitcoin recently saw a slight rebound, trading around $91,400, the long-term sustainability of Saylor’s high-conviction Bitcoin accumulation strategy remains a subject of intense debate and speculation amid market volatility.
