Morgan Stanley Unlocks Crypto Investing for All Clients
Morgan Stanley, a prominent US investment firm, announced a significant expansion of access to cryptocurrency investments for all clients, including those with retirement accounts, effective October 15. This policy shift eliminates previous stringent requirements that limited crypto access to clients with at least $1.5 million in assets and an aggressive risk tolerance. This move reflects a broader evolution in the firm’s approach to digital assets, influenced by a changing US government stance under the Trump administration, which aims to position America as a “crypto capital.”
Key governmental actions supporting this shift include the passing of the GENIUS Act for stablecoins and the appointment of Paul Atkins as SEC chair, leading to the dismissal of enforcement cases against major industry players like Coinbase and Binance. Consequently, Morgan Stanley will enable trading of prominent cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Solana (SOL) through its E-Trade subsidiary, and currently offers Bitcoin funds from BlackRock and Fidelity. This proactive adaptation also helps the firm compete with platforms like Coinbase and Robinhood.
While broadening access, Morgan Stanley’s global investment committee advises a cautious approach, recommending an initial maximum allocation of up to 4% to cryptocurrencies, tailored to individual investment goals. The firm plans an automated monitoring system to prevent client over-concentration in these “speculative assets,” as emphasized by Chief Investment Officer Lisa Shalett. CFO Sharon Yeshaya also noted the potential of stablecoins, which major banks like Bank of America and Citibank are exploring, indicating a transformative trend in the financial sector that Morgan Stanley is actively monitoring for future offerings.
