Cardano’s Leios: 11,000 TPS & Infinite Scalability?

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson recently unveiled Ouroboros Leios, a groundbreaking protocol upgrade promising “infinite scalability.” Leios, described as Cardano’s most ambitious iteration, utilizes a telescoping design, building upon existing infrastructure while offering significantly increased transaction throughput. Key to Leios is the adjustable input-block (IB) rate, allowing for dynamic scaling. Simulation results show a remarkable increase in throughput, ranging from 6 TPS with a single IB to an impressive 11,000 TPS with multiple IBs for smaller transactions and 180 TPS for larger ones. This scalability is achieved without compromising Cardano’s existing security model, maintaining its 50% Byzantine fault tolerance and 24/7 liveness. The upgrade is extensive, impacting nearly every aspect of the Cardano node, from ledger logic to cryptography. A “follow-the-sun” development approach is being used to accelerate implementation. While the full implementation is expected to take 9-12 months following the completion of the formal specification and simulations (anticipated in the second half of 2025), Leios is poised to revolutionize Cardano’s transaction capacity. Its arrival coincides with a roadmap of Layer-2 solutions (Hydra, Mithril, etc.) further enhancing scalability. Hoskinson highlighted Cardano’s unique ability to integrate zero-knowledge proofs, leveraging the UTXO model to enhance efficiency. The overall strategy combines Leios’ base-layer improvements with Layer-2 enhancements to prepare Cardano for significant transaction volume growth from various DeFi applications and potential AVS systems. The project is characterized by a rigorous research-driven approach, including extensive simulations and formal specifications, setting a high bar for the cryptocurrency industry. If the timeline holds, Cardano users could vote on the Leios SIP in early 2026, potentially delivering a significant throughput boost by the end of 2026.
